This Week at LSS - Dec 2
Hi LSS Family
Today your child is bringing home a self reflection on core competencies. What are core competencies DTravs? In the B.C. curriculum students are to connect their learning to the following CC’s: Communication, Thinking, and Personal and Social.
This week we provided an opportunity to have students connect their B block course to Communication. We plan to have other days throughout the year focusing on the other competencies. Ask your child for the document, it is a self-reflection. Remember we are all learners.
NOTE: IMPROV is cancelled for Dec 2nd due to weather.

This Week at LSS - Nov 25
Hi LSS Family
If you have lost faith in humanity maybe this will change your mind.
Today was PJ and Pancake day. This is a LSS tradition that occurs after Light Up. Staff got up earlier than they normally do and made pancakes for students. How did students respond?
- When coming in they recognized there was a line up and waited patiently and with very good attitudes as we had larger numbers than expected and wait time was long.
- NO complaining was heard. Could have been that the Holidays tunes playing were too loud.
- Students helped one another in some cases serving their friends first.
- They cleaned up after themselves.
- Please and thank yous were heard throughout the MPR
- When our Elder came in the room, students made sure that she was served right away.
There is hope for the future. Keep doing a great job around raising your kids.

Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) Caregiver Workshop – Eating Disorder Focus
Dates: November 22, November 29, December 6, December 13, 2022
Time: 4-5:30pm
Location: Zoom – Facilitator will send out Zoom link before workshop start
Caring for a loved one with an eating disorder can be stressful, overwhelming, and at times terrifying. Caregivers can be unsure of what to say or do to support their loved ones and often experience fear that their involvement in their loved one’s care will make matters worse. If your loved one is struggling with an eating disorder, NARSF Programs is offering an EFFT Caregiver Workshop, via Zoom, to help you gain the skills and confidence to take an active role in their recovery.
The workshop will be offered over 4 weeks and will focus on four main components: emotion coaching, behavior coaching, relationship repair, and working through blocks. It is our hope that participants will leave this workshop with:
– Practical skills to support their loved one’s emotional and behavioral challenges
– Skills to repair and/or strengthen their relationship with their loved one
– A greater understanding of their own fears and emotional obstacles that may be interfering with their caregiver effectiveness
– A stronger belief in their own ability to care for and support their loved one
This workshop is intended to support parents and caregivers of loved ones with an eating disorder or disordered eating and will be offered as 1.5-hour sessions over the course of four weeks. The sessions will focus on four main components: emotion coaching, behavior coaching, relationship repair, and working through blocks.
Registration: Caregivers wishing to participate in either EFFT workshop are asked to contact Anna Van Tol by email at avantol@narsf.org or Call: 250 754 2773 ext. 105.
Affordability fund
Through funding from the Province, LSS has received money that we can allocate to families that are in financial need. Do you need a grocery gift card to help you through these tough times or maybe a gift card for Woodgrove Mall in Nanaimo or Walmart? Often at LSS we support students that might need some clothing or pay fees so that they can do extracurricular activities. This money can go towards such needs. Let me know if we can help you out. We are all in this together.
49th Parallel Grocery receipts
Did you know that the school gets 1% of the value of grocery receipts that are handed into the school donated by the 49th Parallel grocery? Outside the main office window there is a box for receipts. Please consider dropping them off or sending them with your kids to drop them off. Every little bit helps.
