There will be a practice after school on Thursday for all girl soccer players. If you are interested in playing this year, please attend.

VIU Exploration Day

Have you considered a career in Health Care? Well on April 10^th, VIU is hosting an amazing day on campus to give students an opportunity to explore and ask about Health Care programs offered at VIU.  At present time, qualified Health Care workers are in need.  We hope to have representatives from Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) that can answer your questions and professors will be available to get to know and talk to.  This event is for students in grades 10-12.  Lunch is provided but you must find your own way to VIU – note VIU charges for parking.  This will be an incredible day and there is only room at present time for 52 SD68 students.  Check your email or see a counsellor for the application link.

The Youth wellness van is here today until 3pm. They can be found out back by the shop area.

Uy’ skweyul Ladysmith Secondary Students and Families,

The last few weeks have been a busy whirlwind of course selection, student learning surveys, YDI surveys, visits from elders and the Yukon Education Committee, and an Anti-bias Mini Film Festival. We thank students and families for their support and flexibility as we navigated through the busy lead up to Spring Break.

We also want to take a moment to congratulate our Senior Improv team, under the guidance of Mr. Bill Taylor, for earning a spot to compete in the Canadian Improv Games National Tournament in Ottawa at Canada’s National Art Center. We also want to thank and acknowledge our school and greater community for their support and generously donating through the benefit show, silent auction, or the school directly. For those still looking to contribute, donations can be made through the QR code below, by selecting Ladysmith Secondary and the Improv initiative.

A large thank you also goes to all who donated towards the Interact club’s fundraiser for LAFF to provide menstrual products for those in need. Based on the amounts raised, several staff members may get a pie in the face when we return after Spring Break. Stay tuned to see how we did!

Track & Field season is once again starting up this spring at LSS!! We had several students qualify for the Provincial Championships last year and are continuing to grow our program.  We will be offering running, throwing and jumping events. Practices will start after Spring Break on Wednesdays and Fridays after school.  If you have a background in javelin, shot put or discus we would love your help in any capacity you are able.  Please reach out to Brandie Lewis (brandie.lewis@sd68.bc.ca) or Hamish Thomson (hamish.thomson@sd68.bc.ca) with any questions.

Finally, whether you are heading out on an adventure or staying close to home, we hope that you each find time for rest and relaxation. We look forward to seeing you all after spring break, recharged and ready to finish the school year in a good way! Uy’ skweyul Ladysmith Secondary Students and Families,

I hope you all had a restful and relaxing family day weekend. It has been a short, but busy, week here at LSS. In addition to being our second week of the Anti-Bias Mini Film Festival, we were also honored to have guests from the Yukon First Nation Education Committee visiting our school to learn more about our Land and Language Program and the beautiful work that is happening in our school community. This week we also had our second lockdown drill of the year.  The purpose of these drills is to allow staff and students to know how to respond in the event of an actual lockdown. A lockdown is when the threat is inside the building. The exterior doors are to remain unlocked so that RCMP have easy access to all locations within the building.

As we come to the end of February, there are many upcoming opportunities for students and families. Please see below for more details about these opportunities and reach out to info.ls@sd68.bc.ca with any questions or concerns.

Early Dismissal and Parent Teacher Interviews

Students will be dismissed at 2:00 PM on Wednesay, February 28th for Parent Teacher Interviews which will be held on teh same day in teh gym from 3:30-6:30 PM. We look forward to seeing you all!

Anti-Bias Mini Film Festival Reminder

LSS is an amazing school community – but it is not a community that is presently free from bias and discrimination. Given that February is Black History Month, and also includes Anti-bullying day, this is a good opportunity for us to engage with our student body around creating a school community that is safe, welcoming, and free from bias. Each week will have a short video that will be shown to classes, followed by a short discussion, an opportunity for a writing reflection, and a class activity. The themes covered in these short videos include bullying, racism, homophobia, ablism, and general unkindness. We know these conversations might be challenging for some, especially those who experience discrimination as a part of their daily lived experience. If your student needs support or a safe space during one of these conversations, please have them connect with their counsellor. Each week will include a different block (next week it will be in C block).

GRASP 

Growth, Resilience, Acknowledgement, Safety, Preparation and Planning (GRASP) is a full-day workshop that gives students the skills to become effective peer helpers. The focus is on mental health, wellness and resilience. The workshop is open to students in Grades 9-12. See Ms. Dolen in Counselling or Aileen Tuck in Outreach to sign up for this invaluable training opportunity. It will be happening on February 29^th (full day) in the Career Center.

Ultimate Frisbee

LSS is looking for a parent who is willing to help support an Ultimate (frisbee) team at LSS. Our first practice will be Monday, February 26^th, running until the end of April. If you are interested, please contact Nadine Epp-Evans at nadine.epp-evans@sd68.bc.ca.

Parent Sessions on Youth Substance Use

The Ministry of Education and Child Care, in partnership with adolescent Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Hayley Watson, will be hosting free virtual sessions on youth substance use for parents/guardians, caregivers and caring adults. Dr. Watson will provide valuable insights, practical tips, and resources to equip participants with the tools needed to guide their children and youth toward making positive choices when it comes to substance use.

Key Takeaways for Participants:

• Learn why children/teenagers are drawn to substances.
• Understand what causes and maintains substance use disorder and needs.
• Increase your child’s ability to make positive choices about substances.
• Acquire practical conversation tools for discussing substances in the home.

Participants must register in advance due to limited capacity. Session dates are:

• February 28, 6:00 – 7:30 pm PST – Click here to Register

On February 1st, families of students in grade 10 and 12 received information about the upcoming Student Learning Surveys. Grade 10 and 12 students will be completing the survey between February 26^th and March 1^st.  Parents can also complete the survey by following the instructions below. Responses are accepted until May 3^rd.

To complete the survey:

1. Go to any computer that has an up-to-date internet browser access at home, work, or school.
2. Go to www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey/access.htm
3. Under the Parent section- Direct Access – no logon number required select:
   • District: the name of your child’s district,
   • School: the name of your child’s school,
   • Language: the language of your choice.
4. Complete the survey by clicking on the appropriate circle to answer each question.  Move to the next set of questions by clicking on the right arrow in the bottom right corner of the screen. Click on the left arrow to navigate backwards.
5. When you are finished the survey, you will get a message “Thank you for sharing your views”.
6. Once complete, your school will have the results immediately.

Bronze Cross and Bronze Medallion Opportunities

Please see the attachments about upcoming opportunities through the Town of Ladysmith for Bronze Cross and Bronze Medallion programs. A quick snapshot:

• Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross are the first steps to becoming a lifeguard or swim instructor
• Bronze medallion requires candidates to be 13 by the last day of the course.
• Bronze Cross prerequisite is Bronze Medallion (You can register for both right away if they chose to do them back to back if they were unsuccessful in medallion they would be refunded)
• Bronze Cross is worth 2 grade 11 credits

PAC Corner :

February 21 Meeting Highlights

• The PAC was tremendously grateful to receive a $2950 cheque from the Ladysmith Eagles for the school Hunger Bites program.
• The PAC voted to sponsor a textiles field trip in the amount of $300.
• This year, changes were made to BC Gaming regulations, and gaming funds can no longer be used to support student bursaries.  Given this and the wealth of bursaries available to LSS students, it was decided to discontinue the PAC award moving forward.
• Please continue to send your Country Grocer receipts into the school, it’s appreciated!

2024 February Teen Activity Calendar

As we reach the half-way point of February, I want to take a moment to thank all staff and students for an excellent start up of second semester. I want to congratulate our junior and senior improv teams for an excellent showing at the Islands this past weekend, and to Mr. Taylor for his leadership.

Anti-Bias Mini Film Festival

I also want to acknowledge the start of a four-week Anti-Bias Mini-Film festival.  LSS is an amazing school community – but it is not a community that is presently free from bias and discrimination. Given that February is Black History Month, and also includes Anti-bullying day, this is a good opportunity for us to engage with our student body around creating a school community that is safe, welcoming, and free from bias. On Thursday February 22^nd, we will be having our second Lockdown drill of the year. The purpose of these drills is to allow staff and students to know how to respond in the event of an actual lockdown. A lockdown is when the threat is inside the building. The exterior doors are to remain unlocked so that RCMP have easy access to all locations within the building. Thursday will be a drill, but there may be RCMP presence on site to help us practice.

Speak Out/ Reach Out/ Help Out 

Grade 9 students will engage in a 45‑minute Vancouver Island Crisis Society presentation with the important message: Speak Out if students are in emotional distress or worried about someone else, Reach Out for help and support, and Help Out by encouraging others to do the same.  The presentation will be from 9:45-10:55am in the MPR on February 20^th.

Toilet Paper Drive

In partnership with the Arts Council of Ladysmith, LSS participated in a Toilet Paper Drive from February 1^st to February 15^th.  Students and families brought toilet paper donations and participated in “Toonies for TP”. We are pleased to have provided a substantial donation of toilet paper to the Ladysmith Food Bank.

Bronze Cross and Bronze Medallion Opportunities

I hope you had a great (school) long weekend followed by a short week as staff engaged in professional learning.  Second semester is off to a great start and students are settled into their new classes. February is a short but busy month for our school community, so there are several important updates below to let you know about upcoming events.

Report Cards

Another reminder that report cards were released on the MyEd parent portal on February 7^th.  If you are having trouble accessing the report card, please contact your student’s counsellor or email the office at info.ls@sd68.bc.ca

Course Selection

Next week students in grades 8 through 11 will be participating in course selection for next year. To access the school Course Selection Booklets please click the link to the correct grade they will be entering for the 2024-25 school year:

• Grade 8

• Grade 10-12

Please look at this with your student to identify what courses they may need or want for their pathway to graduation and plans after leaving LSS. If they have any questions, please have them connect with their counsellor.

Youth Development Instrument (YDI) Surveys

All Grade 11 students will be participating in the Youth Development Survey on February 16^th and 17^th. A letter was sent home last week with more information about survey. A short video can be found here that outlines more about the survey. If you DO NOT want your student to participate, pleas contact the office.

Toilet Paper Drive

In partnership with the Arts Council of Ladysmith, LSS will be participating in a Toilet Paper Drive from February 1^st to February 15^th.  Please help support the Ladysmith Food Bank by donating toilet paper (single or packages of toilet paper will be accepted). Let’s break a record and fill the food bank shelves. All donations can be brought to the office.

I hope this message finds you well at the end of our first week of semester 2. At this time class changes are complete, and all students should now be settled into their classes. As a reminder, next week is a short week as both Monday and Tuesday are Pro-D days.

Report cards will be available on the MyEd parent portal on February 7^th.  If you are having trouble accessing the report card, please contact your student’s counsellor or email the office at info.ls@sd68.bc.ca

Toilet Paper Drive

In partnership with the Arts Council of Ladysmith, LSS will be participating in a Toilet Paper Drive from February 1^st to February 15^th.  Please help support the Ladysmith Food Bank by donating toilet paper (single or packages of toilet paper will be accepted). Let’s break a record and fill the food bank shelves. All donations can be brought to the office.

Student Learning Surveys

Yesterday, families of students in grade 10 and 12 received information about the upcoming Student Learning Surveys. Grade 10 and 12 students will be completing the survey between February 26^th and March 1^st.  Parents can also complete the survey by following the instructions below. Responses are accepted until May 3^rd.

To complete the survey:

1. Go to any computer that has an up-to-date internet browser access at home, work, or school.
2. Go to www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey/access.htm
3. Under the Parent section- Direct Access – no logon number required select:
   • District: the name of your child’s district,
   • School: the name of your child’s school,
   • Language: the language of your choice.
4. Complete the survey by clicking on the appropriate circle to answer each question.  Move to the next set of questions by clicking on the right arrow in the bottom right corner of the screen. Click on the left arrow to navigate backwards.
5. When you are finished the survey, you will get a message “Thank you for sharing your views”.
6. Once complete, your school will have the results immediately.

VIU Child and Youth Care Program Virtual Session

Vancouver Island University’s Child and Youth Care Program has asked us to share Information about their upcoming virtual session.  The session will take place on Feb. 7 from 4:00 – 5:00 pm, via zoom.  All the details can be found at this link https://campaign.viu.ca/info-sessions-cyc.

Bronze Cross and Bronze Medallion Opportunities

Please see the attachments about upcoming opportunities through the Town of Ladysmith for Bronze Cross and Bronze Medallion programs. A quick snapshot:

• Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross are the first steps to becoming a lifeguard or swim instructor
• Bronze medallion requires candidates to be 13 by the last day of the course.
• Bronze Cross prerequisite is Bronze Medallion (You can register for both right away if they chose to do them back to back if they were unsuccessful in medallion they would be refunded)
• Bronze Cross is worth 2 grade 11 credits ( I have attached for your staff reference)

Food Deliveries at School

Skip-the-dishes, Door-dash, and other food delivery services are not permitted at the school. Please remind your student not to have these deliveries made to the school.

Congratulations on completing the first semester of the 2023-2024 school year. Monday, January 29^th is the first day of Semester 2. Grade assemblies will occur on the morning of Wednesday, January 31^st and will include important information and reminders for students.  Students were all provided their second semester timetable last week during their B block class. If they did not receive their timetable, please have them connect with their counsellor or check in at the office. Students were also given the opportunity to see a counsellor to make any required changes.

Career Technical Centre (CTC) – Dual Credit Enrichment – Tuition covered

Grade 12 students that are taking a minimum of two courses at their home school have an opportunity to enroll in up to two courses in a semester at VIU. The courses are used as elective credits that go towards graduation BUT also towards a certificate, diploma or a degree program at VIU. Students that enroll in this CTC program also get their tuition covered. You still have some costs such as VIU student activity fee, supplies or other expenses attached to the course but this is an amazing opportunity.

Interested current Grade 11 students should apply using the CTC website (https://ctc-careerpaths.ca/) and select Dual Credit Enrichment. Application deadline is January 31^st, 2024.

As we approach the end of another semester, I hope this message finds you well. Much of this week’s information is a carry over from last week. As always, please contact the school if you have any questions or concerns.

The last day of classes for students will be Thursday, January 25^th.  Friday, January 26^th will be a completion day for those students who have missing work that still needs to be completed. Teachers will communicate directly with students and families if they are required to attend on the Friday. Busses will be running as usual for the completion day for students who require transportation to the school.

The first day of semester 2 will be Monday, January 29^th.  Timetables for second semester will be distributed to students in B block on Monday, January 22^nd. Students requiring timetable changes will have the opportunity to connect with counsellors between January 23^rd and January 26^th. At this time, our courses for second semester are very full. Course changes will be incredibly limited and will be made in priority order for those students requiring graduation requirements.

As we navigate the recent winter weather that we have been experiencing, I wanted to take a moment to express our sincere appreciation for your flexibility and understanding regarding recent school cancellations due to snowy weather. As a reminder, if schools are closed due to snow, or any other weather-related problems, announcements will be made on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM,WAVE 102.3 FM, and 91.7 COAST FM) by 6:15 a.m., or earlier, on the day of the closure. In addition, the district will post the information on the district’s website, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram and Facebook. Families may also receive a message through the School Messenger notification system via phone, email or text. Please keep in mind, however, that there may be situations where this is not always possible, for example, power outages or technical problems. Finally, next week is the January sitting of the provincial assessments for literacy and numeracy. The sitting is to accommodate students who have missed a previous assessment. All students who are registered to write these assessments have received a letter from the school. Uy’ skweyul Ladysmith Secondary Students and Families,

It seems like just yesterday I was writing a welcome back from summer letter, yet, in the blink of an eye, we have already arrived at the last day before Winter Break. Regardless of your plans, the winter break offers a valuable opportunity for rest, rejuvenation, and quality time with loved ones. I hope this time away from school brings you joy, laughter, and cherished memories.

As we bid farewell to 2023, let us also express our gratitude for the incredible efforts of our students and the dedication of our teaching and support staff. Ladysmith Secondary School has seen remarkable achievements, growth, and camaraderie this year, and it is truly a testament to the collaborative spirit that defines our community. In this spirit, I wanted to share a phone call I received yesterday morning from an 87-year-old community member that recently moved to Ladysmith. They were walking downtown and came across a group of youth and were unsure what to expect, given the large city they moved from. They were thrilled when the group presented them with a random act of kindness. It is nice to hear the warmth and kindness our students are sharing in the community.

Wishing you all a wonderful break of rest and relaxation. We look forward to all that 2024 will bring.
