What’s up Doc?
Do you know that you can attend medical school on Vancouver Island? Do you know that you don’t need an undergraduate degree in science to become a doctor?
The Island Medical Program (IMP), which delivers the UBC MD Undergraduate Program at the University of Victoria, can give you all of the info you need to know at one of their free virtual or in-person information sessions. They have two different programs available for the students at Ladysmith Secondary:
- MD Outreach Ambassador Program – Run by the UBC MD Undergraduate Program admissions office, this program is designed to get students in grades 8-10 onto the university path and excited to pursue a career in medicine. A current UBC medical student will provide a 30-60 minute overview presentation of the medical school and share their own experiences thus far. We strive to pair our student presenters with schools from or near their hometown to make it more relatable for your students. If you are interested in learning more about this program, click here.
- IMP High School Information Session – Hosted by the IMP admissions team, this session is designed for students in grades 11 and 12 who are already looking into university and who may be interested in attending medical school. The IMP Admissions Coordinator will provide a more detailed breakdown of the UBC MD Undergraduate Program admission requirements and what your students can start doing now to prepare for application. The session will also explain UBC’s distributed medical education system and how your students could earn their MD on Vancouver Island.
If you are interested in learning more about our information sessions, please email imp.outreach@uvic.ca.

This Week at LSS - Oct 14
Hi LSS
Good communication is good (Travers, 2022). Just wanted to remind you that checking in with teachers is available not just during parent teacher interviews. In saying that many teachers are using google classroom. The best way for parents to use google classroom is for them to sit with their child and go through it together. When you do that you can see not just the assignments but how they are assessed. Try it out.
In the past, LSS used a platform called Freshgrade. It got sold and unfortunately it is not available for us to use in Canada anymore. Grrr.
Google Classroom Parent session
Our very only Mr. Sieben is putting on a session Oct 26th from 5:00 to 6:00 pm at the school on how parents can use Google classroom. Let me know if you would like to attend.
Before P.A.R.T.Y – Grade 8 students Oct 19th at the school
What is the Before P.A.R.T.Y. Program? It is a group of 4th year Bachelor of Science in Nursing students from Vancouver Island University who have been working with the RCMP community policing team to provide drug awareness and prevention education to grade 8 students in our community.
The Before P.A.R.T.Y. Program presents information on illicit drug awareness, prescription drug misuse, and marijuana side effects and the influence on mental health. We cover important topics such as the presences of fentanyl in drugs, peer pressure, how to respond to an emergency, and more.
Careers 11 (CLC12A) grade 11 mock election vote
On October 14th, we will be hosting Student Vote for all of our Grade 11 students. This is part of grade 11 careers course. Once again LSS is working to prepare students for life after they graduate. We have prepared a short 10-minute presentation on voting for students to view one day prior to the vote.
During Provincial and Federal elections we do a whole school vote but for this Municipal one just the grade 11s are participating.
