This Week at LSS - Dec 3rd
Hi LSS
Do you set goals? This year each staff member set a personal goal connected to our school goals. At staff meetings each month, five staff share their goal and discuss the impact on student learning. What were some of the goals?
- Asking questions: students need practice in asking questions. At LSS we say “Once you are done your assignment ask a question.” This demonstrates that learning always continues
- Application: how can you take what you are learning and now apply it?
What are the LSS goals:
Student Success:
Improve student achievement by creating engaging learning opportunities
Literacy and Numeracy
Focus on literacy and numeracy proficiency
Aboriginal Understandings:
Value and increase knowledge of Aboriginal perspectives on our path to reconciliation
Building Community:
Nurturing an inclusive culture of kindness
Emergency Procedures
Families received a letter about our lockdown which took place on November 29th. Teachers do review the emergency procedures with their classes and a general outline of our emergency procedures is on the school website under “Students and Parents”. A couple points to note: If a lockdown is in progress and a student is outside the building, a sign will be on the entry doors to indicate a lockdown is in progress and students should not enter the building at that time. Our secondary gathering place is FJCC If a lockdown occurs between classes or on a washroom break, they would enter the closest room immediately.
A reminder that during a lockdown, the use of cell phones is prohibited as it puts students and staff at a safety risk.
Presently, administration is working with the family, district and RCMP to follow up on the situation. As in all these situations, privacy is respected.
Coins for Food Drive – December 6th – 10th
We are starting our Coin Drive this Monday. All classes that raise over $100 will win a Pizza Party. Students are encouraged to bring in their loonies and toonies to help LSS achieve this year’s goal of raising $2500 for the Ladysmith Resource Centre’s Food Bank.
GSA Community Panel Event:
Are you interested in supporting and learning about the LGBTQ+ youth in your community? Do you have some questions about queer youth that you just haven’t had the opportunity to ask about? If either of these statements reflects you, this event may be of interest! Thursday, December 16th, at 6:30 pm, Ladysmith Secondary School’s GSA (Gender And Sexuality Alliance) is holding a community panel event to support the learning of LGBTQ+ youth in the community. This event is composed of two sections: the first is a panel section between a few members of the community, (chosen beforehand,) and a few LGBTQ+ youth from the school, talking in-depth about questions lots of people have! The second section is direct questions from you, the audience! This would be the time to ask about any unanswered questions that didn’t get discussed in section one. We will also be selling items from Alphabet Accessories, a student participation lead club, made for supporting queer youth through accessory designs, including button pins, bracelets, and more.
If this event is of interest to you, please email, ladysmithgsa@gmail.com to reserve your seat for free! Followed by your full name and contact information (email or phone number.) First come first serve! Only 125 spots are available. We are NOT checking for vaccine passports, but we will be contacting tracing and taking all appropriate health actions. Each individual requires their own contact tracing information. Your safety is largely taken into consideration. This event is scheduled to be an hour and a half, starting at 6:30. Doors open at 6:00. The event is being held at the LSS Multi-Purpose Room.
Hope to see you there!

Masks update
Strong encouragement to keep wearing your mask and to wear it properly. A reminder video will be coming out very soon for all students. However, I do want to mention that sometimes I hear people say that teenagers are unruly and difficult to work with. I quickly remind them that I work with 650 students and they do a great job in following the mask rule. We just need to keep persevering.
