This Week at LSS - June 7th
Welcome Back LSS
January 10th LSS is back in session and ready to go. I appreciate the patience of students and parents as we go through these tricky times once again. As we move into next week, LSS is continually being fluid in planning, teacher coverage and student instruction as we do not know how COVID will affect student or staff attendance due to sickness.
We are bound by the guidelines that MHO creates. So many decisions are not ours but at LSS we do want to put in place enhanced safety measures that are under our control. Below are reminders and LSS specific changes for the month of January.
- Reminder of the importance of wearing a mask properly – needs to cover mouth and nose
- Wash and sanitize your hands often
- Minimize gathering in groups and respect personal space of others
- Use exits and entrances nearest classrooms or lockers if possible – snow might make this tricky but our District maintenance folks have done a wonderful job
- Keep doing your daily health checks and stay home if you do not feel well. https://www.k12dailycheck.gov.bc.ca/healthcheck?execution=e1s1
- Students will be eating their lunches brought from home in the last 10 minutes of the class before the lunch break. This is to reduce the number of students eating in halls resulting in students keeping their masks on more often.
- Cafeteria is still open for purchasing food at lunch; however, only one line for service will be created. To reduce numbers at lunch time, students wanting to purchase food will be let out of class 10 minutes early if it is your grade’s day – but just if purchasing food from our cafeteria.
- Monday – grade 8
- Tuesday – grade 9
- Wednesday – grade 10
- Thursday – grade 11
- Friday – grade 12
As changes develop from the Ministry, messaging will come from the district. Checking the SD 68 website for updates is a great place. www.sd68.bc.ca COVID – 19 side tab
School Board voting – LSS gym January 15th from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
The community is asked to vote in this by-election to elect one school board member. See attached flyer for more details.
Student and parent learning Survey – grade 10 and 12s only
Please take time to let us know how we are doing. A great way to do this if you are a parent of a grade 10 or 12 student is by participating in the learning survey.
Every year the Ministry of Education conducts learning surveys with our grade 10 and 12 students and parents/caregivers. Grade 10 and 12 students will be taking the short 15 minute survey between January 19th and February 28th in their classes. Parents/caregivers are invited to participate in the survey as well any time between now and April 30th using the following link: http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey/access.htm
Once on the page, under Parents and “Direct Access-No logon number required” choose our school district (Nanaimo-Ladysmith 68), school, language of preference and “Log on”. Thank you for providing your valuable feedback. The survey covers a range of topics, providing a comprehensive picture of the educational experience in B.C. Public Schools. The information gathered is used to assess the effectiveness of educational programs, to improve educational program delivery and to report on student performance and achievements toward system goals such as Human and Social Development and Career Development.
Cafeteria menu – reduced menu for the week January 10th to 14th. See attached
Dates to remember
January 10th – school reopens
January 17th week – students grade 8 to 11 practice logging into MyEd student portal in preparation for course selection starting February 14th (seems like a “Love”ly day for this) for 2022-23 school year

This Week at LSS - Jan 4th
Happy New Year?
Welcome back from a very different winter break. I hope that you have found time to rest up and enjoy the season. I live on a very steep road and have been snowed in for most of the time. Even though I have a bike trainer system in my house to burn off my energy, my wife still cannot wait for me to go back to work.
So what is the game plan? I know that the District has communicated out a message to all NLPS families but I wanted to reach out as well. I will not be restating all of the information however wanted to provide some additional points for consideration.
Staff will return to work on January 4th but school will not be in regular session until January 10th.
What does this mean? From the 4th to the 7th teachers are not teaching new material. If you are not at school, you are not missing out on any new material. As a result, we are expecting very low attendance as most high school students are able to stay home without supervision. If you are an essential worker, and I leave you to make your own decision, and your child cannot be at home, the school will be open to receive them. The work that they do will not be new but will be meaningful.
I have been an educator for almost thirty years and I have never seen a situation where schools have been asked to operate in this manner. I want to use the word “fluid” to describe what Ladysmith Secondary will look like next week. We will adjust depending on who shows up and will do our best.
As we move forward, I want to remind you that safety guidelines are still in place:
- Proper wearing of masks is important
- Washing/sanitizing your hands is essential
- Not gathering in groups is best practice
- Respect personal space and avoid contact
- Stay home if sick
- No spectators for extra-curricular events at this time
I will be relying on people’s flexibility and understanding. I am thankful for the Ladysmith community and know that we can persevere through these times.
Have a safe New Year.
D. Travers
This Week at LSS - Dec 17th
Hi LSS
It was the last day of classes before Winter Break all were excited and beginning to shake.
The thought of no books, no pencils, no pens had us all checking clocks waiting for it to begin.
There was only one person with a tear in his eye who would miss all the excitement, a very strange guy
No students, no teachers, no phone calls home, what would he do? He would be all alone.
But he had an idea that would help pass the time, “I could ride my bike it would be so sublime”.
So, if on the holidays you hear a strange sound, look out your window and gather around
For you just might see someone full of good cheer, riding and wishing you the best of the New Year.
Have a peaceful, restful and joyous Season!
Big thanks to Students’ Council
Wow – what a great students’ council we have. The world will be in good hands with leaders like this. The planning and work by council and teacher sponsors leading up to our break brought us all together – Many thanks.

Latest News on Travel
For those planning on spending some time outside of Canada and the US this holiday season, it is important that you adhere to the Canadian and B.C. government’s travel restrictions upon your return.
Unvaccinated students are subject to a 14-day quarantine and must not attend school, daycare, team sports and large or crowded settings such as a sporting event. This is in addition to the pre-entry, arrival and Day-8 test measures currently in place. We realize that travel restrictions may change in the coming weeks, therefore it is best that you visit the Government of Canada website for up-to-date information.
For families travelling abroad, please connect with your child’s teacher before the start of the winter break in order to arrange continuity of learning during the quarantine period.

Hi LSS
Winter break is just around the corner but we still have one week of learning left. I hope that all have checked out report cards and have game plans to make adjustments as needed. Our counselling and admin. teams have tried to reach all students and families to ensure that there are no surprises. I do not like surprises and most people do not either so that is why we put in this effort.
Now if a surprise is some carbon parts for my bike then I like those surprises.
