Literacy assessment Nov 1st – 5th
A criteria to graduate is that literacy assessments in grade 10 and 12 needs to be written. Students have been contacted if they are doing those assessments next week.
Career Technical Centre
On Wednesday, November 10th at 12:45 pm Rob Gowan-Smith will be coming to Ladysmith Secondary to present on CTC programs and Dual-Credit opportunities. Please take attendance and then immediately send any Grade 11 students to the multi-purpose room for the presentation. There will be a call down for all Grade 11s at the start of the block.

Enhancing Substance Use Prevention in BC Schools Survey
In Phase 2 of an ongoing engagement initiative, the Province is seeking input on how to help meet the challenge of youth substance use and its associated harms. Parents and caregivers in our school community are invited to complete this short survey by November 19

This week at LSS - Oct 21st
Since Friday, and Monday, are Professional days you get the “This week …” early.
Just a reminder as we plan for Halloween fun that fireworks/fire crackers are illegal for students to have in their possession and then of course that makes it illegal to shoot them off. I think about the NFL player for the Giants (Travers you are a Patriot fan why are you talking about the Giants?) who blew some of his fingers off using fireworks – I want to make sure we are all staying safe.
Costumes for Oct 29th dress up-As you plan your costume be sure that it is not offensive or disrespectful in any way, it is appropriate for a public building and that you do not have any weapons included in your costume game plan.
Okay Travers do you have any fun news? You bet.
Student Council is excited for this year’s haunted doll house. We have created a schedule for Thursday, October 28th and Friday, October 29th that will allow for all of our students to participate.
Also note, our costume contest is back! We will be in the multi-purpose room at lunch with our amazing guest judges, Mr Winter, Ms Rosioru, Ms Sharpe and Ms Powell.
Feeling spooky LSS? Alphabet Accessories is holding our first pop-up shop of the year on Thursday, October 28th and Friday, October 29th, at lunch in the foyer. We’ll be selling buttons for $2, single-strand bead bracelets for $3, and masks for $5. See you there!
Before Party Program: Thursday, Oct. 28th
The Before P.A.R.T.Y Program presents information on illicit drug awareness, prescription drug misuse, and marijuana and mental health. We cover topics such as the presence of fentanyl in drugs, peer pressure, how to respond to an emergency and more. The program will be presented in person and takes approximately 3 hours to present in total. This is for grade 8 and 9 students. Grade 10 students will participate in Party later in the year.
Young Leaders Council
Youth aged 14 to 26* are invited to join the StrongerBC Young Leaders Council to provide direct and ongoing feedback to Brittny Anderson, who has been appointed the Premier’s special adviser on youth. This is a unique opportunity for youth to have their voices heard and help influence government decision making as we continue to build a stronger post-pandemic future.
This is a one year commitment, with the option to continue after the one year.
Applications need to be submitted by October 27th and can be done online here: www.gov.bc.ca/youngleaderscouncil
BC Youth Parliament
Applications are also now open for the 93rd B.C. Youth Parliament (BCYP), which is a province-wide non-partisan organization for young people ages 16 to 21. It teaches citizenship skills through participation in the December parliamentary session and in community service activities throughout the year. Youth Parliament is a one-year commitment. Each applicant who is accepted to attend as a member of BCYP must pay a $425 registration fee, however Doug Routley MLA’s office will be sponsoring this year and so this fee will be fully covered.
Applications for the BCYP need to be submitted by October 26th and can be found online here: https://bcyp.org/applying/.

Is the weight room confusing or intimidating? Are you interested in becoming stronger? Do you want to learn how to design your own training program? If you answered yes to any of those questions, Strength Club is for you. In Strength Club, you will learn how to strength train safely and effectively no matter what your fitness level is. Strength club meets Monday – Thursday at 3:10 and Fridays at 1:35. This is NOT a drop in exercise club. Members are expected to attend 2-3 sessions per week. At LSS our staff are working hard to enrich students’ experiences. Beyond Athletics and Arts, for which I have GREAT appreciation, here are other student opportunities. Thanks to the MANY staff for their volunteered time.
Student Council – Tuesdays at lunch in the Career Centre sponsored by Moira Dolen and Jen Fink. Here is the new executive: Presidents: Maddy Jolly and Kayla Henry; Vice Presidents: Bianca Steele and Brianna Narduzzi; Jr. President: Cadence Burns; Secretary: Emma Pakosz; Public Relations: Katie Cornett and Ava Kennedy; Information and Technology: Ella Hillbrecht.
Journalism Club – Thursdays at lunch in room 122 sponsored by Jen Fink. This club has published two articles and numerous letters to the editor in the Chronicle and highlight the activities, accomplishments and events happening at LSS.
Compost/Eco Club – Fridays after-school in room 120 sponsored by Terry Steele. This club continues to foster our compost program and is supported by our Cafeteria to reduce waste and decrease LSS’s carbon footprint.
Students Taking Actions Against Racism (STAAR) – Wednesdays at lunch in room 201 sponsored by Stefania Rosioru and Brandie Lewis. STAAR allows for IBPOC students to share their experiences and plan anti-racism workshops and events. A core group of students will be inviting students looking to foster change to join the group. The first meeting of each month will be open to everyone (IBPOC and allies).
Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) – Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch in room 220 sponsored by Natasha Sharpe. A social club meets on Tuesdays and the button-making happens on Thursdays. Teachers are invited to join a GSA meeting at lunch.
Yearbook – Tuesdays at lunch in room 217 sponsored by Joel Bennett. Want your Yearbook to be the best ever? Join the club.
Chess/Games Club – Thursdays after school from 3-5 pm sponsored by Bob Sieben. The group started off with 5 students and is looking to grow. Please listen to announcements and encourage interested students to join.
Dungeons and Dragons – Thursdays after school sponsored by Jen Fink. Go on an adventure with D & D
Fitness Club – After school sponsored by Curtis Reich. Pump it up with a fitness expert.
SHAPE – SHAPE will be running again this year. This is a closed group, however, referrals for interested students can be made through Kim Chadwick in counselling. SHAPE -Sexual Harassment Awareness, Prevention, and Education – Sponsored by Kim Chadwick and Jen Silvey – Mondays at lunch bi-weekly. Grade 10-12 student-led group that provides psycho-educational information for student’s healthy relationships, boundaries, communication, and relevant resources.
Parent Teacher interviews Oct 19 – 21st
Like last year, our PT interviews will be virtual (at least for semester 1). Staff have sent out emails that give you an opportunity to book a time when teachers are available. This might be during one of the days or multiple days. As always if you cannot make it work, emailing a teacher is a great way to stay on top of what is happening in your child’s learning.
